For all the hype about the latest get-fit trends and high-intensity training programs, researchers have found that walking is as good as any other form of exercise when it comes to living longer.

Researchers in Europe found that walking for 25-minutes a day can extend your life by as much as seven years.

A study published by the prestigious British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) also reports that a regular walk at an average, brisk, or fast pace reduces the mortality rate by 20% and the risk of cardiovascular disease by 24%.

As a matter of fact, numerous studies have revealed that walking has many benefits. Moreover, it doesn’t matter how old you are or what medical condition you have, walking offer benefits to everyone.

Exercising After Illness or Injury

Medical experts advise people that have suffered an injury or serious illness not to rush back into training. Walking after surgery is considered “crucial”.

Studies have found that during a recovery period, walking – “early ambulation” – eases the road to a speedier recovery. Light exercise reduces pain and enhances bowel movement.

The reason for that is because walking even at a steady pace can cause you to breathe more deeply and quicken the heart rate.

Breathing in more oxygen enhances the restorative process of living tissue that relies on nutrients to thrive. Deeper breathes also help with blood circulation so that your healthier blood reaches the parts of your body that need it the most quicker.

Obesity and Ageing

Obesity is recognised as one of the most important global health threats worldwide. The World Health Organisation report that being overweight increases the risk of heart disease.

Moreover, other studies have found that walking is just as beneficial as running. However, the latter burns off twice as many calories so are better for weight loss.

Walking is better for ageing, however. A steadier pace puts less pressure on the heart, but increases stamina, immunity and helps to prevent or manage chronic conditions. And you can still lose weight.
